Leaving on a Jet Plane
So maybe it's more like a crop duster than a jet but this morning, I'm flying out to Oklahoma to teach a retreat to a darlin' bunch of girls from Grace Church of NW Arkansas. (They are on the border of Arkansas/Oklahoma hence all the state-hopping.)
I wanted to tell you more leading up but I'm just flat out of time so I'll try to share some pics when I get back. I covet your prayers. First that the Lord would cleanse my heart and my prone-to-wander mouth. But mostly I pray for these girls. None of us ever goes on a journey such as this without expecting to hear a specific word from God. Satan has long tried to keep me focused on my own abilities (or lack thereof) guaranteeing a roller coaster of emotions on my part if I feel I didn't say the right thing. (It normally comes in the form of calling myself all manner of idiot when I'm done.) BUT, God has done a hard-fought, transforming work to bring me to a place of full confidence in HIS ability to use stammering lips coupled with His Word to change hearts. So, if I ramble, may it be in scripture and not stupidity. And, Dear Jesus, above all may you be glorified and may we all be changed. (Hi Grace Girls! Aren't you so glad you've asked me to come? :)
Okay, gotta run. Thank you so much for your encouragement and support. I love you all, Homies and Non-Homies alike. :)

If There Be Any Music Lovers Among You
Wow. This has been one week where God has absolutely rocked my world from Houston to Atlanta. I'm working on telling you all about it but I have a more pressing question as I continue to work on study notes for my church's "Stronger" Retreat.
I love music - particularly as a way to reinforce the message of Scripture. My problem is I'm somewhat of a band snob and I don't venture out and buy cd's unless they are among about six of my favorite artists. Because of this, I know I'm missing some fabulous music. What I'm asking you is this: What are some of your favorite songs that reinforce the idea of being powerful, strong, standing our ground, etc. etc. You get the idea. I want to make an iPod playlist to both pump myself up and also to make available to the girls who are coming for the weekend.
Can't wait to see your faves!!

A Spectacular GiveAway
Remember yesterday when I told you I had an amazing surprise for you from a very special pastor/theologian/teacher/author? Well, it's time to spill before I bust a gut from all the secrecy.
On behalf of Desiring God Ministries, Abraham Piper (John Piper's son), has graciously offered FIVE COPIES of his father's book Spectacular Sins: And Their Global Purpose in the Glory of Christ for me to give to you! *squeal*cabbage patch*booty shake*fist pump*whoot whoot*
{So I'm a little excited.}
My first intention was to do a simple giveaway in conjunction with a review. But, the more I thought about it I realized there was no way on earth I could adequately tell you about this book in one 3-4 paragraph post. Truthfully, my adding any commentary to this work would be like giving my Kindergartner a Crayola to color over a Monet. The word 'injustice' comes to mind.
The truth is, this isn't the kind of book that I want to breeze through. It's one on which I want to feast. Traditionally, one doesn't sit at a banquet table alone. He or she is surrounded by family and friends which brings me to my next thought.
What do you think about Book Clubbing Spectacular Sins? About discussing it chapter by chapter (perhaps sometimes through live chat?) and truly studying the scriptures in relation to sin and suffering? Girls, it is vital that we become diligent in girding ourselves in knowledge and understanding over these hard questions so that we will always be ready to explain the hope within us. 9 out of 10 times I have the opportunity to talk about the Lord with an unbeliever they inevitably say, "If God is so loving, why do such horrible things happen in the world?" I want to be able to answer that question authoritatively instead of with a string of cliches that find no basis in Scripture. Only when we settle those issues in our own minds will we be able to do the same for someone else. As Piper says, "Knowing great things about God will make us ready not to collapse under cataclysmic conflict and personal catastrophe."
I want to know those great things. Don't you? This Book Club will definitely be a No Fluff Zone. We are SMART girlfriends and it's time we started believing it! Let's consider great things and build a little muscle in our physical and spiritual noggins. You with me?
{Crossing fingers and hoping you will say yes..}
Okay, first things first.
To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment. No bells or whistles or hoops. You can earn a double entry by linking to the giveaway and leaving a second comment with the post url. I will use a random number generator to choose FIVE WINNERS on Friday, November 7th.
Secondly, let's see about the Book Club possibility Poll Daddy style:
Okay, now we need to consider when to begin...
Alrighty then. I can't wait to hear your thoughts! Again, thank you to Dr. John and Abraham Piper for being so extravagantly generous with this giveaway. Your awesomeness knows no bounds!
p.s. I have to give a special shout-out to my dear friend Brooke who gave me this book for Pastor Appreciation. I've already highlighted every other sentence. Good stuff, girls. Good stuff.

Surrendering the Secret
When Luke and I served as NAMB missionaries in Mississippi, part of our ministry was in the Crisis Pregnancy center located in Clarksdale. The work they do is vital and I don't think enough can be said for the lives that are saved as a result of their labor - both the lives of unborn children and the lives of the mothers.
I've been privileged to have met (online) Pay Layton who is the author of the bible study, Surrendering the Secret. This study deals with the pain many women experience post-abortion, especially if this is something they have kept hidden. My friend Melinda at Traveling the Road Home is hosting a giveaway of FIVE study kits. I would love it if you would visit her to find out more of this wonderful study and enter for a chance to win.
Blessings on you!

Sarah Wasn't The Only Princess
This weekend I traveled to Pigeon Forge to teach a retreat entitled "Sarah: A Woman out of Control." (I may have mentioned it a time or three). While I was preparing the material, God opened my eyes to many things but perhaps the thing most relevant personally was trusting that God's will where I am concerned will be accomplished even in the face of human impossibility. There are promises God has made towards me, but I am the world's worst at trying to finagle the details to make sure what I believe He desires has the opportunity to come about.
Because we all know God needs help in working all things together for good, don't we? Let's say I'm convinced God has led me to apply for a job or seek a ministry position. Don't you think I'm doing God a favor by emailing and following up continually? Really, what if the person forgets me and ends up messing up His calling on my life? And then there is always the hubby. Won't God appreciate the rest if I play the Holy Spirit and manipulate him into being a more godly man instead of making God take the time to mold him Himself?
Girls, the one who neither slumbers nor sleeps is not lax where your details are concerned. If He wants you to have that job, it won't be given to another. And if He wants your hubby to step it up, a pounding heart will gain much more than a pounding head. Give God the opportunity to work on your behalf! In my experience, He's not very fond of splitting glory.
Oh well, I didn't mean to go off on a tangent. Let me show you some pictures!
This is my Mom-In-Law, Frankie, and My Friend Kaye. I can't just call Kaye by her given name. It must be preceded by My Friend or it just isn't the same. All of you should aspire to be a friend to these two girls. They plan these retreats twice a year as a way to bless their churches and girlfriends. There is such a diverse group there every time and I can't tell you how much I look forward to my times with them. And, it would be enough for them just to go through the trouble of coordinating the travel arrangements but THEY COOK. And we aren't talking cafeteria food, honey. Just let the words Paula Deen, mac-n-cheese, pinto beans, meatloaf, chicken casserole, biscuits and gravy, homemade chocolate cake, etc. etc. float around in your mind and then you'll have some small idea of the smorgasboard we girls are treated to for mealtimes.
What? Did I hear you say you want to be on Frankie and Kaye's friend list? They would be delighted. :)Christy, Melanie, Mary Lynn, and Jerri. I'm praising God for some promises He's fulfilled for Melanie. Her DIL Christy is a hoot! Mary Lynn and Jerri co-organized the weekend and worked tirelessly in the kitchen with Frankie and Kaye. Y'all, I can not say enough about the deliciousness of the buffet they prepared or how much I know we all appreciate how hard they worked to make sure the girls enjoyed our weekend.
Ellen and Margaret. Margaret is going on a cruise in October that follows Paul's missionary journeys. I'm so
jealous happy for her I could die.
Christy and Judy. Both of them sweethearts! I wish I had pictures of every woman there but my picture taking abilities are limited. Please know I'm crazy about every one of you!
Okay, now here's where I get to tell you about Laura Beth's Balloon Retrieval Skillz. Remember how I told you The Girl was bonkers over the balloon?
Well, she accidentally let it go.
She was sobbing.
Right as it was time for me to teach.
Now obviously I couldn't run down to the store and get her another and y'all, these ceilings were crazy high. Thankfully, crazy tall Laura Beth came to the rescue.
She couldn't bear seeing The Girl so brokenhearted so, get this, she STACKED TWO CHAIRS ON A TABLE TOP and tried to reach the balloon string.
She wasn't tall enough but there was no limit to her crazy so she decided to hold The Girl up, ON TOP OF THE TWO STACKED CHAIRS ON A TABLE TOP, to see if she could reach it. By this time, it was either have a heart attack or take pictures.
I chose the pictures.
When we realized that the toddler on top of the auntie on top of the two chairs on top of the table wasn't going to do the trick, one of the ladies dug through the kitchen drawers and found barbecue tongs. I don't think it occured to any of us to take The Girl out of Laura Beth's arms so she could snap at the balloon string.
Laura Beth got the balloon, saved the day, and The Girl was smiling once again.
You rock, LB!!

Here's The Girl with her Grandmama (Laura Beth's and Luke's mom). I love this picture of them!
And this is probably my favorite picture of the retreat. The Girl was clearly not interested in hearing anything her mother had to say during the sessions. In fact she said, "Mom, is there something I can do while you are talking because I know it is going to be really boring."
There's a referral I'll put on my bio.
Otherwise, she was such a total angel for all four gatherings and of course, everyone there just babied her to death. It swelled my heart for our first Mommy/Girl getaway to be centered around The Word. I just look forward to the day when she'll pretend she's listening to me instead of Purble's Place and Barbie.com on the headphones.
I still have more pictures of The Birthday but this post is already as long as my arm. I'll spare you until tomorrow!

More Bible Study!
Quick Question:
I'm working on finalizing some retreat material for a study called, "Sarah: A Woman out of Control". No slander meant to our girl, Sarah. The ultimate point will be that we need to get comfortable with the fact we aren't meant to hold the reins to our lives.
Anyway, I'm praying now over the portion of Scripture where Sarah got her Ishmael - and then despised him. (Genesis 16) Have you ever manipulated to get something you wanted and regretted it deeply when you got what you asked for?
Just curious...I want to be sure I'm speaking in relevant terms on this point and thought you girls could give me some insight...
Love ya!

'I AM' Study
Round Two
Round Two

LESSON EIGHT
Instrument of Wonders
Key Verses:
"That they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has appeared to you." Exodus 4:5
"I have written to you fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you young men, because you are strong, and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one." 1 John 2:14
As we begin today, let's take a moment to regain our context.
In Lesson 7, we found Moses on the 'west side of the wilderness' asking God the very important question of 'who am I, but more importantly, who are You?' God re-introduced Himself to Moses as 'I AM' or 'Yahweh', a Name of God that had not yet been revealed to the children of Israel. By giving Himself this memorial name, God forever established His faithfulness to His covenant people in times past, present, and future.
Too often our identity is found in a material possession or social status. When asking ourselves, 'Who am I?', be certain the answer is bound in the heart of Christ. He is everything we can not be and sufficient to fill every needy place. He is beautiful, all-knowing, strong, self-assured, and so much more so we do not have to be! When our lives are entertwined with His Spirit, we will never have to long to be more than we are, for HE IS. Praise Him!
Go HERE for the rest of today's lesson!

Bible Study Wednesday
Round Two
Round Two

"But Moses said to God, 'Who am I, that I should to to Pharaoh and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?'"
Exodus 3:11
"Who am I?"
That, girls, is a loaded question. The world tells us our identity is defined by our appearance and possessions. In a sense, the world is correct in identifying our worth as something outside ourselves. However, notice when Moses asked the question in the above referenced passage, God did not respond with a list of all Moses' qualifications. Instead He said, "I will be with you."

I AM Round Two Bible Study
Lesson Six
West Side of the Wilderness
Lesson Six
West Side of the Wilderness

Exodus 3:1-9
Acts 7:30-35
Welcome back! I am so glad you have returned after our week break. This lesson has been burning in my bones and if I don't let it out soon, I may spontaneously combust! God's presence is often manifested in fire in Scriptures. We are about to study the most famous blaze in history. I hope it fans the spark in you as it has me.
Remove your darlin' little sandals, Girls. The place we are going is holy ground.
"Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law,the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side fo the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed." Exodus 3:1-2
In this passage of scripture, forty years have passed for Moses in a life that looked nothing like he'd planned. However, we have learned from our previous lessons that he is decidedly content being married to Jethro's daughter, tending to Jethro's sheep and living in Jethro's land. On this particular day a fire blazed forth in the desert in the sight of a man who needed it more than he had ever known. Moses was convinced that he 'was'. Little did he know, he was about to meet I AM.
Girls, our God is one of present-tense. There is no situation where you have ever been, are in now, or are going any time in your future where He will not prove Himself to be a current solution. I believe sometimes we have the mindset that because our issues are rooted in our yesterdays, our past failures, our shameful histories, that God is unable to work a miracle in it today. Don't let the enemy feed you that lie! God's eyes are ever on you, even in the west side of the wilderness and for everything you are not - He IS. He can and will redeem a life not lived for Him and use it for His present glory but just like Moses, sometimes that calls for a cleansing.
Let's look at a bit more scripture to explore this thought:
"When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, 'Moses, Moses!' And he said, 'Here I am'. Then He said, 'Do not come near here, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.'" Exodus 3:4-5
I am fascinated by the word 'call' that is used in this verse. It is not merely a shout or command, but when used with a name, is an establishment of authority over the one being called. The same concept is found with Adam in the Garden with his naming of the animals thereby establishing authority over them. God was in a sense beginning His commissioning of Moses by reminding him who was in charge. We'll see in next week's lesson how Moses tried to argue that point, but make no mistake, God allows dialogue but never disagreement where His will is concerned.
After God called to Moses, we find that he responded much like Abraham when he was asked to sacrifice Isaac. Whether in prosperity or pain, when God called the response was, "Here I am." I pray that when my God comes looking for me that He doesn't have to search for me in the bushes as He did Adam and Eve in the Garden. God did not call out because He didn't know where they were. He wanted them to realize how far they had run from Him. It is a wise woman who constantly asks the question, "Where am I?" in her walk with the Father.
Moses is told not to come near because he is 'standing on holy ground'. The terminology used in this phrase tells us the ground was consecrated and was in essence a place of cleansing. Though God used all those 40 years in Midian as preparation for Moses, he was living in past tense as an alien and stranger in a land not his own. God was extending an invitation to start over, be clean, and to be used of Him to work His wonders and spread His fame. It was time for Moses to lay aside the prince and the shepherd as well as any other pre-conceived idea of how he would bring about Israel's rescue and become the God-defined deliverer he was born to be.
Girls, I have no way of knowing where you are in life. I simply know where I have been in mine. I have experienced difficult times in the past that I can look back on now as preparation periods for my 'now' ministry. When I have endured long times of waiting, it has always been followed by a time of an intense encounter with the Lord where He lit a fire to have me recognize to some extent the reason I had to go through that trial. That fire was not only for illumination but also for rejuvenation and restoration depending on what my state of mind was at the time. I know our lives would be so much easier if God would just show up in our azaleas and tell us audibly what He would have us do. But you know, He did that for the Israelites and they doubted Him nonetheless. I'll take His written Word and Holy Spirit anyday. I can forget what a voice tells me. The power of it fades when hard times come however, I can never forget what a black and white word tells me day after day. What the Bible tells me is God loves mankind and He has chosen to reveal Himself to them through me and you. What will we do with that commissioning? God's deliverance will come! I pray we will be a willing instrument through which He brings it. Let it be, Lord. And let it be me.
Let's apply what we've studied with a few Discussion Questions.
1. How current is your God? Is he up to date on all your issues or do you have old hurts you still hold behind your back?
2. Has the enemy ever told you there are situations that are 'old news' that are better left stuffed down? Or perhaps because they were so long ago they can't possibly be affecting you now?
3. In the matter of established authority, does God truly reign in your life? Where are you when He calls your name?
4. Do you ever feel God has forgotten you in your 'west side of the wilderness'?
5. Have you ever experienced a time of cleansing where God has illuminated and rejuvenated you? If not, do you find you are in need of this now?
Please know I pray for each of you as we continue this study together. I appreciate your emails with your very personal responses to what God is doing in your life. When His Word falls on the fertile soil of our hearts, He promises it will bear fruit. I'm counting on us being some citrus-y (is that a word??) girls when we are done!
Blessings on you!!!

I AM - So You Don't Have To Be
Round Two
Lesson Five
"I Was"
Round Two
Lesson Five
"I Was"
Welcome to Chapter Two! I am so excited to dig into our next unit of study. By this point, you have a whole new perspective on Biblical beauty from Chapter One and the first four lessons. I pray what you have learned of God's idea of loveliness is something you will hold on to day after day when the enemy attempts to use the mirror to tear you down. Can we resolve ahead of time to instead turn that mirror back on him? In doing this, you will remind him of a divine paradox. He used to be the most lovely of God's creation but Sin made him repulsive. We were once repulsive in our Sin however, by faith in Jesus Christ, God has made us beautiful. Satan is the ugly one, dear! Do not let him assign his fate to you!
We have come to the place in our study of Moses where we find him fleeing the wrath of Pharaoh because of his killing the Egyptian on behalf of a Hebrew. We are told in the New Testament book of Hebrews that he fled Egypt 'in faith'. Can I suggest to you that sometimes we can be 'in faith' yet be totally bewildered, downcast, confused, and downright demoralized when things do not turn out like we planned? Are there any hands to raise? Moses flight led him to Midian which was located across the Sinai peninsula. (Midian is modern-day Saudi Arabia) The inhabitants there were descendants of Abraham and his wife Keturah, yet they were not devoted worshippers of the One True God.
Can you fathom Moses' run across the desert? His stumbling into the area of the Midian well, the image of him distorted from the heat rising from the scorching sand? There is no doubt he caused quite a stir among the shepherds as he defended the Midianite women in his sweaty, Egyptian finery. The noble gesture earned him a place at the dinner table of Jethro, the priest of Midian, and Jethro's daughter Zipporah as a wife to boot.
"And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter." Exodus 2:21 (KJV)
The word 'content' in this context is very interesting. It is the Hebrew word "ya'al" (Strong's 2974) and means "to be willing, to show willingness, to be determined, to undertake to do, to make a beginning. It is making up one's mind to commence a given activity. Today we use terms such as 'initiative', or 'motivation'. The word has the nuance of determination and resolve." Now, in comparison to this meaning of 'content', consider another definition NOT used here. It is simply, "to breathe after".
Can you feel the difference? Moses' contentedness was a determined decision to be happy in this new situation. He was a man with no family, no home. This opportunity was all he had going for him so he resolved to pull himself up by his fancy sandal straps and make a new life for himself. The other 'content' in my mind is much more dreamy and romantic. It is the steady rhythm of one who is not holding her breath in anxiety. It is the happiness of a mother watching her husband and children play together. It is the young couple without a penny to their name but rich in love. It is the college student who embraces God's future for her life. It is the deep exhale of bliss.
And so Moses' new life began. He became a shepherd, a detestable vocation to any Egyptian, much less one raised as an Egyptian prince. Hebrews tells us that Moses chose to be mistreated with his own people instead of enjoying his life of luxury, but something tells me he did not envision how far the mighty would fall.
The next verse in our Key does not seem earth-shattering at first glance, but I am fascinated by the implications of the wording in it. Let's take a deeper look.
"And she bare him a son, and called his name Gershom; for he said, 'I have been a stranger in a strange land."
In considering this verse, we will be setting the stage for perhaps the greatest encounter in the Old Testament between God and man - Moses and the Burning Bush. You have no idea how anxious I am to present it to you and how inadequate I feel to do it. If God has taught me nothing else through this study, it is that He is ENOUGH. I trust Him to complete His work and even if I say it wrong, He will have you read it right. I'm praying for a visual Pentecost! :)
Look with me at the definition for the name 'Gershom'. Remember how significant the naming of a child was to the ancients. You can literally look at a child's name and know the heart of the parent. Moses had become an alien in a strange land. Here was the birth of the concept of being far from our heavenly home, of living somewhere we do not belong. Moses was a City Boy who had found himself in the backside of the desert. What a terrifying, lonely feeling.
What I want to focus on right now is not so much Gershom's name but with the verb Moses used before it, 'have been'. There is yet some time to pass before Moses will meet God in the Bush, but you already know the name by which God will introduce Himself to Moses - I AM. I get the shivers just typing it! Here is the really fascinating part. The Hebrew verb translated 'I AM' (hay ah - Strong's 1961) is the exact same verb translated in Moses' naming of his son as 'I have been'. When God says, "I AM ever-existent, I AM ever-present, I AM ever capable", Moses will reply, "I Was. I was in the position to save the Egyptians. I was going to be their deliverer. I was going to do mighty things for You, God. I really was."
Have you ever found yourself floundering in a desert? Unsure of your next step? Feeling like a 'has been'? There have been seasons in my life when my situation was so barren that I could do nothing but look back on brighter days and think, "then I could have done something great for God. Then my faith was deeper, my relationship with God stronger, my circumstances more blessed." I used to be so heartbroken over what I believed were wasted years of ineffectiveness when now I understand God used some very painful circumstances to demonstrate His power to heal. They were not wasted days at all. They were days of faith, days of preparation, days of strength. His strength, not mine. He wanted me to know Him so when it was time to spread His fame, I would have an intimate knowledge of the Person of whom I spoke. It is hard to convince someone of God's goodness when you have never actually tasted it. It would be like trying to describe the view from the top of Everest when you have never climbed it. He and I have climbed together and the summit is amazing, Dear Sister! He'll take you too, if you let Him.
Let's discuss what we've learned today.
Discussion Questions:
1. Have you ever found yourself 'in faith' yet bewildered or demoralized?
3. If you are not content, are there circumstances that keep you from this feeling?
4. Have you ever found yourself in a place where you looked back on a period of your Christian walk and believed a great opportunity passed you by?
5. Do you ever believe your faith was stronger in an earlier time in your Christianity and find yourself floundering now?
6. Can you recognize that this season may be one of great preparation instead of a period of "I Was"?
In our study together next week we will continue with this line of thinking as we meet Jehovah God. I can not wait to show you how God can make the great exchange of our "I Was" for his 'I AM'
Don't forget to sign the Mr. Linky if you would like to post your answers on your blog. Otherwise, please leave your thoughts in the comments. I would love to hear from you! Also, please go visit other participants and remember to check back on previous lessons as new girls are starting each week. Thank you, thank you!!

'I AM' Round Two
Lesson Four
Not Like I Planned - Part Two
Lesson Four
Not Like I Planned - Part Two
*UPDATED: Hey Round Two Girls! Where are you? I think I may have buried last week's Lesson with some other posts so it wasn't clear this one was up. I'm reposting Lesson Four this week and since Round One is complete, I'll start posting a new lesson every Wednesday. Sound good? Can't wait to hear from you! :)
Key Verse:
Girls, I have to start out by telling you the subject matter of this week's lesson is, in my friend Iris' words, Stinging My Heart. You see, yesterday, I had this lesson all typed out with everything completed but the Discussion Questions. I worked on it for six hours. With an exploding brain and a great sense of relief for having it done early (which in and of itself is a miracle for me) I clicked the "Save As Draft" button, saw the material appear in my Dashboard and went to bed.
This morning I woke up, turned on the computer and guess what was no longer in my Dashboard? You guessed it, honey! Lesson Four was no more! And can I be honest with you? I'm still mad about it! I have whined and moaned and felt sorry for myself ever since. Today was one When Things Did Not Work Out Like I Had Planned. The only way I can feel better is to believe that God must have wanted to give me a visual - a sermon illustration if you will. I get it, Father. Thanks for that. (It's okay to talk to Him that way ..... He knows I love Him.)
Which leads to our topic today. When circumstances do not fall in line with our preconceived notions of what is best for us, how do we react? Do you, in my Southern slang, pitch a hissy fit? Do you become angry, bitter, or lash out? Or do you mope, pout, and withdraw? If I am truthful, and I must be because it is in the Preacher's Wife Handbook, then I have to confess I have probably acted like many of these depending on the circumstance. Today was a combo day of hissy fit and moping. Today we are going to continue our study of Moses in the context of learning how to react when all of our best laid plans come to naught.
In our last lesson we established that a "forty year old time was fulfilled" for Moses at which point God stirred a longing in the "lower deeps of his nature" to go see about His brethren. Godly stirrings will always cause a desire for action or else a sense of misery for the thing not being done. My husband pokes fun at me because I have so many grand plans and intentions. I am an energetic beginner but fizzled finisher. There is a personality test here in which I found out I was a squiggle and a circle. (Go take it, it is really accurate!) Basically what that means is that in a project, I am your big idea girl but don't count on me for details or seeing a thing to completion! However, in matters of spiritual calling, I can only describe my desires as a fire in my bones that would cause me to spontaneously combust were I to hold them in. To help you understand what I mean, I will tell you I could not have gone to bed tonight without getting this study re-typed. Oh sure, it would have been fine with you if I called it off until Thursday or postponed a week, but I LOVE doing this. It is a godly desire and I would be miserable if I didn't complete it! On the contrary, I can still live with myself if I don't get around to sewing new cushions for my porch swing or getting my scrapbooking done. Do you get the picture?
Let's have a little fun and use our imagination for a moment. In your mind's eye, picture Moses a mighty, powerful prince of Egypt being pulled throughout the kingdom in his chariot. He would have been wearing traditional Egyptian dress, elaborate make-up, a headdress. Now picture him on the balcony of his palace overlooking the splendor of Egypt. Anything he desired was but a wish away, yet he was unable to enjoy all this privilege because something, or Someone, deep within him was whispering to him, "It is time."The Exodus, Acts, and Hebrews passages noted above all describe Moses' meeting with his brethren. It happened that when he arrived, an Egyptian was beating a Hebrew. Moses reacted by killing the Egyptian and hiding him in the sand. The following day Moses happened into a fight between two Hebrews. When he tried to intervene, the stinging accusation came, "Who made you a prince and judge over us?? Are you intending to kill me as you did the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and said, "Surely the matter has become known." Exodus 2:13-14 To give further detail to this scene, consider the words of Acts 7:25. "And he supposed that his brethren understood that God was granting them deliverance through him, but they did not understand." In effect, the Israelites were saying, "Who died and made you boss?" And in the words of my boys when they perfectly execute a basketball smackdown, Moses was RE-jected.
Moses supposed they knew! He supposed God made him the Prince of Egypt for a reason. He supposed all his power and his might and his position would be the perfect combination for negotiating a release for his people. He supposed this was the once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver his brethren. He supposed.
What a dangerous word, supposed. It assumes we can plan our own steps, design our own destinies, create our own fulfillment. It presumes others will understand how they fit into our delicately laid plans. It expects there will be no one who would dare throw a cog in the machine. What do you do when the gears grind to a halt and you find it is God holding the monkey wrench? We have faith. We'll get to that more in a moment.
I would like for you to consider a few Hebrew and Greek word definitions used in our focal passages to further understand the implications of the encounter between Moses and his people. This is going to get very interesting!
We have already determined that Moses thought his flesh and blood would understand that he was the one who would bring about their deliverance. The word used for "rejected" or "refused" means, "the idea of falsehood or of a contradiction not only with reference to the object, but on the part of the subject against himself." So in essence, when the Israelites rejected Moses, he then rejected his own self and calling. Is this ringing a bell with anybody!!? I am feeling like the Hunchback of Notre Dame about now.
The words, "who made you ruler and judge over us", actually prophesied the role God would give Moses over the Hebrews. Acts 7:35 says, "This Moses whom they disowned saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' is the one whom God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush." The word the Hebrews used for 'judge' was a person who "was elected or nominated to become part of a tribunal and arrive at a conclusion." The Israelites did not trust this prince of Egypt and they sure did not elect him to act on their behalf. Praise the Lord, man's rejection will never trump God's acceptance! A naysayer in your midst will not thwart God's good intentions in your life to act on His behalf!
I love this next part! In the verse above, the word 'sent' is the Greek word, 'apostello'. Do you see something familiar? Moses was not only a prophet, but a God-ordained apostle. How cool is that? The word means, "to send forth on a certain mission". A certain mission indeed! Can I encourage you in the fact if God can accomplish the cross-country relocation of 2 million people by the obedience of one man, then He is SO ABLE to work out the details of your calling to a good end! The most important thing to remember is even if it is Not Like We Planned, there is never to be a doubt that our outcomes are exactly Like He Planned. We can rest knowing that our God has it covered. This knowledge is where faith lives which brings us to our close.
Hebrews 11 is perhaps the most inspiring chapter of the Bible. It beautifully recounts the stories of many men and women to whom God made promises yet they never saw them realized on earth. However, their faith did not waver because they knew "God would provide something better". (Hebrews 11:39) We are told in Acts 7:35 that Moses was not only a judge for the people, but that God gave him a double-blessing and made him a 'deliverer' as well. This word in Greek means, "to bring forward a ransom". There are so many parallels to be drawn here between Moses and Jesus Christ, but again I must exercise restraint because of the confines of this blog study. However, let it sink in deeply that, just like Christ Jesus, Moses' ransom was the sacrifice of his very life. Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter and instead chose to be identified with the people of God. He did not have to step down from his exalted position to aid the oppressed; however, there was an undeniable, God stirred Spirit at work within him that would not let him rest until his people were free. And though things did not go according to Moses' plan and he would soon find himself fleeing to Midian, he did so in faith. "God, I don't understand why not today. But I will trust You for someday."
By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months.
By faith Moses refused to be called a Prince of Egypt.
By faith Moses denied the passing pleasures of sin.
By faith Moses considered the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt.
By faith Moses recognized a greater reward.
By faith Moses endured because he saw Him who is Unseen.
Sisters, when things do not work out like we planned, when the diagnosis is not what we wanted, when the child is in trouble, when the bills are not paid, when the job is just too stressful, when the loved one continues to reject the Lord, the only way we can endure is following hard after the One who is Unseen. Trust in the One who is refining and preparing you to either be delivered or to be a deliverer. On any given day, you will always fall on one side of that line or the other. No matter which it is on this day, the only way to endure is by Faith.
Discussion Questions:
2. How did you react to your NLIP? Are you still upset about it? Happy about it? Baffled by it? Explain.
3. Have you ever attempted to step into an area of ministry and found your desire rejected? Did this cause you to question God and yourself? Perhaps distrust what you perceived to be your calling?
4. Do you harbor any bitterness towards any individual or situation which you believe waylaid your best laid plans?
5. Have you had a life experience or trial that left you with a shaken faith because it ended in an NLIP? Please share if you feel free.
5. Based on Moses' response of faith to his own rejection, how will you re-evaluate your own experiences or look at future ones differently if a NLIP presents itself?
I realize these questions are kind of 'ouchy' today. Share as much as you feel comfortable. Please remember that others read your blog so be gentle if you think something you may confide might 'stir up stink' as my mamaw would say. You are always welcome to email me a personal note if that is more appropriate.
Have a blessed week! And THANK YOU for taking to the time to study with me! It is an honor you can not fathom.

'I AM' Study
Lesson Sixteen
Lesson Sixteen

'Wide Open Spaces'
It is with a bittersweet spirit that I write this Lesson - our final in the 'I AM: So You Don't Have to Be' blog study. I hope you'll be patient as I share a bit about what this process has meant to me.
I remember clearly coming home last March from our church women's ministry retreat where I first presented this material and feeling God wasn't finished with the message yet - not so much because He told me you needed to hear it, but because it required more time in my own heart to be a Word that would abide rather than be stored away on a shelf as a quaint memory of a great weekend with God and my girlfriends. He impressed upon me to spend more time in the Exodus account by writing the lessons out for this blog.
I had no idea how the idea of a blog study would be received by you, but I continued as a matter of obedience. When I shared my heart with my dear friend Iris, she was so incredibly supportive and even put legs to her encouragement by volunteering to make a study button. Thank you, Iris. You'll never know what fire you've stoked in me!
One thing you can always know about anything I presume to teach is that God has already made my refining crucible melting hot before He ever lights a fire under yours. This study has been intensely personal. 1 Peter 5:10 is a favorite verse of mine. It says, "After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you." This establishment Peter is referring to comes from a couple of Greek words that mean, "to set fast, to turn resolutely in a certain direction, or to confirm" and also, "to lay a basis for, erect, something put down as a substruction of a building".
Girls, there are pillars our God is setting under our faith so that it will be one that does not shrink back nor is shaken. The idea that God is ENOUGH, that He is sufficient in every way so I don't have to be is absolutely foundational for me in a way I didn't comprehend before He led me down a very difficult road. Before this past year, I subconsciously believed I set my own pillars, that I had to be strong and in control so the house wouldn't come tumbling down. So when the house did crumble in a most unexpected way I was left amidst the rubble holding on the only thing which still stood - the pillar of salvation. What is a girl to do when the walls fall in? The worst thing is to try to rebuild that thing on the same sand as before. We have to look to the Higher Rock and allow Him to be the substruction for every single thought, decision, action, word, and deed. It is only when our feet are set on this firm place that He can confirm the direction He has for our lives. This is the message of abundant living - being set on a right course in which we've traded all our dreams for God's.
I am also very sentimental over today's Lesson material as we will be focusing on Moses as he overlooked the Promised Land atop Mount Nebo. I think each of us have one person in Scripture with whom we feel a deep kinship. I can't tell you the number of times I have been the girl at the bush stammering, "But, God! I can't, God. I'm not good enough, God. Pick someone else, God." This one thing I know through studying the relationship between God and His servant, Moses: It is SO not about me. Who am I to say my God is not enough to accomplish anything He wills through me? Satan will seek to turn our acceptance of a task into an issue of pride. If we say 'yes', will others think I think I'm good enough? And in all our looking at one another we have taken our eyes off the One whose glory will not be shared.
By the end of his long life, Moses had his eye on one person - the I AM, Yahweh, his Jehovah. Above all the names Moses could use to speak to God, perhaps the most precious to him was Friend. How else could he climb Mt. Nebo that final day of his life, knowing he would never return? I've read this last Chapter of Deuteronomy so many times always wondering what that scene must have been like. So, imagine my delight when I found the account of the day according to Jewish Tradition as recorded by Jocephus, a Jewish historian. Now remember, this is Jewish Tradition, not Scripture but captivating nonetheless. Just don't get hung up on any extra-Biblical details.
With that said, get yourself a hanky and read Jocephus, Antiquities of the Jews 8:48-49 (*Note - scroll down to Chapter 8, verse 48-49. There was no link for these specific verses. I didn't build them into the post for sake of space.)
Saying Goodbye
Being in ministry, Luke and I have had to say goodbye way more times than I like to count. The first time was when we left for college from the church we were both saved in the year before. Most of the years prior to my salvation, I hadn't cried many tears. I was cold, strong, and self-controlled. The major work God did in my life in that first year after I was born again was simply to turn my black heart into a feeling, beating thing again. During our last Sunday at church, I cried every tear that had been penned up for the last ten. I didn't think I would ever be the same again having to leave those people I had learned to love so much behind. BUT - a wonderful thing I've learned is this: Goodbyes are always followed by hellos.
I can only imagine the things in your own dear lives you've had to say goodbye to: loved ones, church fellowships, jobs, homes, dreams and expectations or perhaps many combinations of these. Based on what I know about God, I can safely say if He has allowed a goodbye in your life, He has replaced it with a hello you never asked for or imagined. What we are seeking in this last section of study is God as our Portion and the satisfaction for our souls.
There is no more beautiful picture of this concept than that of God and Moses alone on that mountain. Moses who had been a Prince of Egypt, a judge and prophet to millions and here he stood overlooking the Possession he'd sought for 40 years knowing he couldn't enter. A lesser man would have been bitter and disappointed but Moses had come to know God Himself as his inheritance and salvation.
Though he would never step foot into what he believed to be God's promise to him as well as the children of Israel, his joy was found in knowing his Canaan was about to be ultimately fulfilled. Just like Hebrews 11 tells us, we may not ever see the thing we believe God has promised us on this earth but our hope is in the ultimate rest of our Savior Jesus Christ. I believe I can also scripturally show you Moses looked forward to the rest of Jesus Christ as well. You are going to love this.
I want you to remember with me Moses' Song in Exodus 15, particularly verse 2 which reads, "The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him, My father's God, and I will extol Him."
Let's look at the word 'salvation'. The Hebrew for this word is 'Yeshuwah'. For those of you who may not recognize this word, it is the Hebrew for Jesus! I have chill bumps each time I read its meaning, "something saved, i.e. a deliverance". Okay, hold on because it gets better. The root word of 'Yeshuwah' is 'Yasha' and means "to be open, wide, or free. i.e. to be safe, to bring salvation, get victory." The opposite of this word is 'to be bound'. So what was Moses saying in his prophetic song? God has become my Jesus. He is my deliverance, my safety, my wide open spaces, my unbinding, my Promised Land.
It only makes sense that Moses would have been saddened by being told he could not enter Canaan, however, he didn't need the 'here' because he looked ahead to his reward and persevered because he saw Him who is invisible. (Hebrews 11:27-28) Girls, sometimes God says 'no'. It may be because of our own sin or more often simply because God is keeping us safe from circumstances we can't possibly know. I love The Message version of 1 Peter 5:7, "Live carefree before God; He is most careful with you." He is careful with you. Oh I could just collapse in a heap in my Father's arms knowing I am safe in His heart. He is careful with me because I am precious to Him. He doesn't want anything to come my way that He hasn't carefully planned. If I do have to experience the fire, He wants to go in first instead of having me run off on my own. Our Father is very careful. Very watchful. Very much in love.
The View From the Top
I live close to Chattanooga, Tennessee and one of our famous tourist attractions is Rock City. The site is perched on the side of Lookout Mountain and, if you believe all the marketing hype, you can look off and "See Seven States!" Along the landing, there are several stands with the metal binoculars that allow you to see for miles.
I always think of Rock City when I read how God called Moses to the top of Nebo and began showing him the Promised Land broken down into each tribes' inheritance. As I prayed over this scene while I was walking just this week, the song 'Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus' came on my iPod (The Third Day version of course). I cried like a baby as I pictured Moses on that mountain looking over the Promise. In my own imagination, I believe Moses' death came just as in the song, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His Glory and Grace." As the earthly Canaan dimmed, the unfading one appeared. Oh, that we could all go out in such a whisper.
It's Time
There is so much more that could have been said and so many better ways to have said it but I pray from the depths of my heart that God impressed at least one truth from this study that will indwell your spirit, abide richly, and change the way you move through this earth. I hope you know you are beautiful in God's eyes. That you are enough because He is enough. That you have enough because He is your satisfaction. He is all that and more - so you don't have to be.
Instead of our list of Burning Questions, I would like to leave you today with just one:
What is one thing God has taught you through this study?
Blessings on you!

'I AM' Study Round Two
'When Life Doesn't Work Out Like You Planned'
Part 1
Before we begin, a couple of things:
2. Talk to each other, girls! :) Part of the growing process in this study is the sharing each other's experience. If possible, work your way through your sisters' links and comment on what they are saying. Often, they have opened themselves up and become very vulnerable with their answers. We need one another's affirmation so be generous with it! You may just find a new soul sister in the process!
3. It is never too late to begin! If you are just finding this study for the first time, simply click on the Study button to take you to the beginning Welcome and Table of Contents. From there you will begin at Lesson One. There are several women who are just beginning. You can leave your thoughts on any Lesson because most likely, someone else is coming along at the same time you are. The 'fresh comment dates' will hopefully give this study a sense of timelessness so it can hang around a while.
With all that said, Welcome back, girls!
I am so excited you are still with me and I pray you will continue on. So far, you have joined me in rejoicing over the birth of the beautiful baby, Moses. I hope you have let the reality settle over you that just like Moses, you were placed just in time to have an impact on this earth through 'unrecurring incidents' of obedience. I also pray you now realize you are awfully pretty in the process. I had to laugh at the conference where I originally taught this series. The girls decided since they were so beautiful they would go upstairs in the cabin and have those extra donuts after all! Now that's what I'm talking about! They got it! So grab your favorite treat, pull up a chair, and let's get started.
First I want to remind you that today's topic will come in two parts. The way the material worked out, I could either make one very long lesson or two moderate sized ones. I've chosen Plan B simply because the confines of Blogland demand it. Believe me, there is SO much more detail I want to give you on each Lesson, but I believe God has asked me to keep this manageable in both time and space. To say I am exercising restraint is an understatement..:) Can I tell you again how thrilled I am that you have joined me in this study? I am having the time of my life meeting you and exchanging insights much like we would if we were in a small group together. I remain amazed at a technology that allows women from all over the world to interact almost as if we were in one of our own family rooms. Aren't you?!
In today's passage, we find Moses at the age of 40 having been raised a Prince of Egypt. I have been fascinated by what I have read in the works of the second-century historian, Flavius Josephus, in regard to what Moses' life may have been like during his 40 years of privilege. The Egyptians were very well-educated in things such as arithmetic, science, philosophy, and medicine to name a few. The princes often served as priests of the various temples. Josephus notes that Moses was used of the Pharaoh to lead a great military campaign against an Ethiopian invasion of Egypt. I want to be clear I am not stating any of these things as Scriptural fact but nevertheless, I am very intrigued by the possibilities of how high Moses' had climbed up the ladder of success before his great plunge into the depths of reality.
As we did in previous lessons, we will toggle back and forth between the Exodus 2 version of Moses life and Stephen's confession in Acts 7. Let's take a closer look at Acts 7:23 which says, "But when he was approaching the age of forty, it entered his mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel."
I am about to jump out of my chair to show this to you! Notice the phrase 'approaching the age of forty'. This phrase is literally translated, "When a forty year old time was being fulfilled for him." Do you remember how we talked about Moses' being born exactly when necessary to be the right age at the right time for Israel's deliverance? Be reminded in Acts 7:17 that the time of the promise of deliverance was approaching. Let me suggest to you that if Moses' physical birth was the beginning of that fulfillment of promise, then this desire to see His brethren was spiritually speaking a 40-year, in-utero second birth into the purpose for which God created him. God was not inactive during this preparation time. He was simply forming the desires and experiences necessary for Moses to undertake this great task. I am reminded of Phillipians 2:13, "for it is God who is at work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Robertson's Word Picture of the New Testament describes this desire to see to see the welfare of his brothers as 'coming up from the lower deeps of his nature." Stirrings this far down only come from One Source, girls. These go beyond feeling straight to the Spirit. God had a people to rescue and it was time to raise His deliverer.
"So does this apply to me?" you ask. Oh, honey, does it ever.
Think for a moment with me about activities you love. Desires you have. Dreams you dream. Spiritual gifts you have discovered. Do you ever wonder where those longings come from and why? I hope we have established in our Lessons prior to this you were born in your generation, in your circle of influence, just in time for God's good pleasure. Obviously, you weren't the only person born in this exact place and time. So what makes you different from the girl on the pew next to you? YOUR DESIRES AND EXPERIENCES. Your compassions, griefs, and gifts are all things which set you apart from your sisters and what sends you in one direction and her in another. The body of Christ has many parts and obviously a 4-headed, 9-toed monster is not going to accomplish anything but scare the life out of people. I wonder if this disproportionate church is what sends people running in the other direction? Think of how different things would be if our body exercised its two arms to embrace those who are lost and dying without Christ. The thing to remember about all these characteristics is that none of them appeared overnight. It takes time to work out our salvation and to realize the full implication of the talents we have been given and/or the deliverances we have ourselves received. It took Moses 80 long years to be ready for the burning bush. This may serve to tell us that we may have some waiting to do. But, in the words of Scarlett O'Hara, "we'll just think about that tomorrow", in Part Two that is.
Hang in here with me on this next point. I preface it by saying sometimes you will question the common sense of your teacher but this just rang out in my head so I went with it. Here it goes...God has made you in the words of Lionel Richie (can I quote him in a Bible Study?:)) once, twice, three times a Lady. (Can't you just hear him singing it or am I totally dating myself?) Here are the three ways: He has placed you just in time, has saved you by His lovingkindness, and either has given or will give you a desire from the 'lower deep of your nature' to accomplish what He intends in your life. Some of you may be saying, "I don't feel that Lisa. I don't know what my gifts are. God is not telling me to do anything big. I'm afraid people turn away if I show them too much of me." I will address those questions more in detail in Part Two of this Lesson, but for now it is critical that we do not mistake Big for Important or equate being rejected by man with being accepted by God.
We will stop here and continue next week by finding out what is really going on when life doesn't seem to be working out like we'd hoped or planned. For now, let's apply what our study has revealed thus far:
Discussion Questions:
1. It was stated in the Lesson that God has made you "once, twice, three times a lady." Where are you in this progression? Obviously we have all been physically born, but are you 'twice a lady'? Have you been born again spiritually? This may be a private matter you'd like to discuss confidentially. If so, email me. If you have already received this gift, write a brief prayer of thanksgiving or testimony.
2. Are you three times a lady? Has God given you a stirring deep within your Spirit to be a 'deliverer'? Do you have a desire or are you already meeting a need in the life of the church, a particular ministry (such as jail ministry, food ministry, etc.) or perhaps individuals who share common issues?
3. Do you ever get tired of waiting for that opportunity to do something
4. What do you consider 'worthwhile ministry'? Are you like me and sometimes find yourself mistakenly thinking it has to be Big to be Important?
5. Have you ever taken a spiritual gifts test? If yes, what are yours? If no, here's a good one from Ephesians 4 Ministry. Will you take it and come back with a response? Knowing some of you like I already do, I can almost pick out what your gift is before you say it. I can't wait to see if I'm right!
Have a wonderful Wednesday!
